Remind us again....why do you want to leave CVS? :-)

Heh. Not such a bad question, obviously!

I started looking into this because moving to WebObjects means leaving behind nearly everything we have been doing for the last 7 years, and with all the buzz about how there are finally decent alternatives to CVS I thought it was time to look into it. I've never been a huge fan of CVS in general; branching is like a voodoo art, and so is following how it assigns version numbers.

As I mentioned earlier I had hoped to avoid Subversion, but it seems to be the current "lowest common denominator" of source-code control; if you want something that's free, reasonably easy to use, works for everyone and from anywhere, you use Subversion or CVS.

I thought the whole "tags are really branches" concept was a bit funky when I first heard about it, but I didn't really care until I realized how much it was going to impact how we do things.

As big a pain as this is turning out to be, I'm going to keep on working with it for the moment, because even if I decide I can't work with Subversion I'm likely to run into a client who likes it at some point, so I need to at least be able to be functional with it.

I'm also posting to the subversion user's list hoping to find out that there is an easier way of doing things than the one I described. But I'm not holding my breath.
