Actually, HyperCard did not die. In fact, one could say that it went from strength to strength. Over the years various vendors produced versions that were superior to Apple's HyperCard, they just weren't endorsed as being 'Apple HyperCard'. Currently the leader is Runtime Revolution (http://www.runrev.com). They have a cross-platform version of HyperCard whose IDE and deployed applications work on Linux, OS X (including universal binary), OS 9, Win32, Solaris (and other unixes). The apps are full-color (unlike Hypercard) and comes with libraries for internet connectivity and XML processing, and native connectors to Oracle, ODBC, MySql, PostgreSQL, Frontbase. Other connectors exist for Sqlite and Valentina. And the pricing is in line with what Apple was charging for HyperCard in the last few years. I was recently reading about a user with a corrupted HyperCard stack that the user could not open in HyperCard nor fix with any of the standard tools for fixing corruption. It would open and save using Revolution even when HyperCard couldn't handle it.
So, if WO was to suffer from the same fate as HyperCard, I'd say we'd all have a lot of reasons to rejoice :-)
