And put a clear: both on the next html markup tag after the last float to "reset" the flow of things. Aren't float and clear just the coolest things in css?!! :-)

Janine, if you are "transitioning to css and semantic strict 4.01 html" (aren't we all?), then grab the Yahoo yui "css/fonts/grids" css stuff and just start using it, especially if you are starting a new project ...... it will save you a lot of time and effort IMHO. It gives you immediate structure and a standard baseline across all popular browsers. They have good cheat sheets too.
