Last time I remember, .gif did not support alpha values. Gif only have a concept of mask, where one color is treated 'special', absolutely invisible.

If you want real alpha value, look at png (and IE workaround).

How can I preserve the alpha value in my gif images? I have the image I want, with proper opacity, in my OmniGraffle file, but when I copy it to Preview, into its own file, the background is opaque. Am I using the wrong image format or is there a better tool I can use? Any advice is appreciated.
