Hi, Ray,
WOW!!!
Let me be the first to say, WELCOME TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD!!! We need
you desperately!
I'm probably saying this for the majority of the members of this
mailing list, but it's a very personal statement: I'm sorry that
things have not gone well for the Apple internal WO development team.
We have all hurt because of it. I'm sorry you were forced (presumably
by your own personal demons) to make the move you did. But I couldn't
be happier to see one of your stature added to the Apple-external
friends of WebObjects community.
Once again, WELCOME. I can't wait to see the contributions you'll
make when unfettered by Corporate constraints.
Fond regards,
Jerry

Hello -
I just wanted to say hello and let people know of something I just
posted on my blog.
The blog is at:
http://worldofwebobjects.blogspot.com/
From the post:
I have a Direct to Web app built that, when I give it an EOModel
as a parameter, launches
a fresh, new web interface that allows me to edit data in the
entities of the model. Imagine
if you could do a "Browse Data" in EOModeler and then edit the
data. One cannot do that,
but one can take just an EOModel and put data into the entities
without creating a fresh
project. I used to create a D2W app to administrate every EOModel
I have in any app, so
I find this useful. I no longer need those duplicate projects around.
By the way, for those who do not know, I have been in the
WebObjects group at Apple for the last ... well, it has been a
while. I started at Apple in 1990 and have been in WO since late
1997. But I have left Apple and now will be doing other things,
many of which will involve WebObjects.
I have not spoken up in the lists as I have wanted to. There has
been a reason for this. I have not been happy about what the
management at Apple has been doing to WebObjects for quite a while.
Eventually, the feeling from my management became mutual. I knew
that if I started to post, that would be the start of a road that
would end up with me saying something, as "email@hidden", that
I would regret. But now, I can speak as myself. And, hopefully, not
say something I regret.
But I am going to try to speak as myself, not as just an "ex-Apple"
person.
Basically, looking at the last several years of WebObjects as a
product, I have only one thing to say right now. I am sorry.
Really. I feel as though I cannot apologize enough. I wish I could
explain the dysfunction at Apple about WebObjects. But if I could,
I imagine that I would still be there, and things might be better
than they are. There were many things I tried to do and was not
allowed to do. But it is also not that simple. There were things I
could have done that I did not do, for whatever reason. There were
things I could have said that I did not say, both internally and
externally. There were times I did speak up and make a pest of
myself that were not strategic. But I tried, and I cared and still
care about the product. Apple is dealing with WebObjects in a
really confused manner for very complicated reasons, but also, my
failings are my own, and they are many. So, that is it for now. I
am sorry. I wish I could say more, but I will have to process some
of this and figure things out.
In the meantime, I think I can help with some issues that
WebObjects has. There is still a lot of value in WebObjects, no
matter what Apple does. Many of you know this. Frankly, I am not a
company, nor do I speak for a company anymore. It may take 30
minutes to make a fix to something and Apple may take over a year
to get that released. I do not have to work on that kind of
schedule any longer. I want to try to assist the community in a
somewhat more agile manner.
We'll see how it goes.
If anyone has questions or suggestions, let me know.
thanx - ray
