Someone should tell the guy who wrote the Blackberry editor - if I
type 2 spaces, it automatically puts in a period and capitalizes the
next letter I type :)

Hi, Ken,
One space has traditionally been used in typography for a couple
reasons, not the least of which was that putting two spaces between
sentences tended to overly widen the space between sentences after
text justification (sometimes referenced as "rivers of white").
Typewriters used mono-spaced fonts and their printed output was
seldom right-left justified, so typists were told to put two spaces
between sentences to better signal the end of the sentence.
PCs, of course, originally hard-wired the keyboard to pixel
combinations that represented characters and displayed these on 80
column wide displays. These were also mono-spaced "fonts", so the
PC tradition carried over from the typewriter.
Macs, on the other hand, have always drawn their characters on the
display from a selected (typically proportional) font, so from
their beginning their displays more closely matched typography than
typing. That's why style rules typically prohibit two spaces
between sentences on the Mac. That's a general rule today, even on
the modern PC, which after a few model generations of UGLY
displays, finally followed the Mac and produced font based characters.
Interestingly, all of this tends to be moot for text typed into an
HTML page, since the browsers reduce any amount of white space to a
single character between words of text. Once again, the browsers
are following the typesetting rather than the typing tradition.
For more information without having to buy Robin Williams' book, see:

In particular, search the article for the word "wedges" for an
interesting side note on how lines of type were mechanically
justified on a Linotype machine and ended up setting the
typographic standard.

Jerry

after periods most of the time (Note: I went back and took them
out on this post :) ).
