I found something online, which suggested Window -> New Editor. But that
just opens up a new tab, not a split view.

You can make this like a split view by dragging the new editor tab toward the bottom of the editor window, once you near the bottom of the window the mouse pointer will turn into a down arrow, with a black outline showing where the window will be drawn. Release the mouse button and you will have the two editor windows tiled in a traditional split view layout.
