EditDateJavascript not notifying webobjects

1) User enters poped up page. 2) Changes date. 3) Pops up another window which upon submittal submits the parent window 4) the entered date gets defaulted back
The EditDateJavascript is bount:
dateformat = "%m/%d/%y"; dateString = dueDate;
Is it because dueDate is a variable and not part of an EO that it doesn't know it changed?
