That was it, very kind of you to help with that, especially since it turned out to not be an issue with WO at all. Trust me to pick the wrong jar to try this out on. And of course I should have googled for that error, I just assumed it was a bog standard class not found issue.

Item #1 http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4249552 suggests you need JDTcompiler.jar on the classpath - which sounds familiar to me (as we use jasper reports for a desktop app). I seem to recall something along those lines.
