To answer your question: it is indeed possible to use AjaxUpdateContainers inside a D2W property component.
(However, I'm sure you're aware there may be other ways to generate a concatenation of firstName and lastName in WO/D2W).

As was pointed out, ERDivaLook is an "ajaxy" D2W interface:
CSS (often the missing ingredient in ajax interfaces) and semantically rich XHTML are its cornerstones.

The second (official) beta is forthcoming this x'mas...

I shall be sure to include an example of a seamless ajax update (to a D2W property) set via the rules.
