Title: [Off Topic] The Joy of the Holidaze
Dear Diary,
Once again our family is off to visit the rest of our family up near the Southern Arctic Circle that runs thru Indiana and Michigan. This year we thought we would make our annual trek just a bit more challenging by flying into Detroit which is currently under 35 feet of snow and ice. My son is a senior in high school and has applied to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor – which is a beautiful campus in June but decidedly less so in December. We wanted to make sure that our Florida born and raised son understood what winter is like in Michigan, we just haven’t figured out how to tell him that is stays that way until April. We figured we might turn his room into a walk in freezer for a couple of months but the commercial models only get down to 30 degrees which feels like a heat wave when it is 10 outside. Based on the cost of out of state tuition it would probably be a cheap experiment and might even raise the value of our house in this down economy. My wife wanted to work on our kitchen – I figured this was a good compromise.
When we visit the relatives up north it is always joyful. Usually when we head home. We end up spending a great deal of time in the car driving between my parents, her parents, my sisters, her sisters and just enjoying the bleak frozen countryside. It reminds me of that silly Jingle Bells song - “Dashing thru the snow...” obviously written by a deranged lunatic. I look forward to our time traveling to and fro between destinations as important family bonding time – a chance to catch up with each other after another hectic year. The kids have a slightly different opinion however and prefer listening to their iPods at maximum volume. My wife enjoys riding in the car with me – it gives her a chance to relax and take a nap. At least I have the little voices in my head to keep me occupied.
A lot of people in Florida head north this time of year so they can have a white Christmas. A lot of people up north head to Florida to get away from their white Christmas. We all get to meet in the airports heading our own directions. You can tell which ones are the Floridians – they have everything they own in their suitcases hoping it will be enough to keep them warm and end up paying $250 to check their bags because of excess weight. The northerners are wearing shorts, flip flops and t-shirts – I can never figure out how they got to the airport dressed like that in Chicago.
I hope all of my friends enjoy the time off during the holiday season and spend some quality time with their families. Just remember that relatives are like dead fish – after three days you need to throw them out. Have a happy holiday and talk to you next year.
