If so, pull it out of there and store it in your project (so you don't have to worry about differing versions later on). That way at least you should be able to make sure that at runtime you're getting what you expect on the classpath.

I'm using WO5.3.3 and have used the Axis 1.4 jar without any problems (i.e., just popping it in the project/build path...)

The deployment is done on WebSphere 6.0

(not in my realm of experience)

and I'm not
sure about the location where the axis.jar should go.
May be I have to define the path ...

Yeah, if you put it specifically on your project's build path and have it bundled with your app that'll probably give you a better result.
