D2WQueryToOneRelationship default selection

Hi list,
Is there a D2W rule I can set to give a D2WQueryToOneRelationship a default value equivalent to the "- none -" selection?
At present, if I want my Search Database query to match on "any" selection in the list of related objects, the user is forced to click on - none -
If they don't, a ClassCastException results when DTW tries to run the query (started from WO5.4). This feels a bit buggy to me, but I'm sure there must be a D2W rule that can work around it. I am very unfamiliar with what rhs DTW rules are possible and scanning the DTW apple docs doesn't help much...they still refer to the old editor.
Thanks,
John
