EOSchemaGeneration was added in 5.4 per the API documentation. I looked at some other APIs but they were depreciated and they referenced EOSchemaGeneration.
It's more important which API you're calling to get the instance of the schema generation ... You want to make sure it's the 5.4 one.

Oh wait, I just noticed you aren't using prototypes ... Yeah this isn't going to work regardless. You are going to have to convert your external types over (or switch to prototypes).
