Folks,
First - sorry for the cross-posting.
Several times we had here or around a beer longish discussions about
how suboptimal the Java Time & Date classes are (I am using the most
diplomatic language I am capable of :-) In addition there is virtually
no good support for spatial coordinates (GIS or Space).
As some of you might remember we used to stick our noses in large
astronomy projects. As everyone should expect, what standard Java
offers is not worth trying (neither it is accurate, nor complete). So
slowly we collected some high accuracy sources for handling time
(actually different times) and spaces (earth and space based
coordinates). This calculations are accurate enough to dock russian
and american space labs or guide earth based telescopes with accuracy
of 0.3" for 100 years. This also includes different calendars and time
zones ... sigh.
We hope to finish our current project by the end of this year and our
plan was to open source most of our time and space related Java
sources. If this will be integrated with Wonder or will be an
independent framework is to be discussed (suggestions are welcome).
At the WWDC I would like to collect your ideas & suggestions about
such a framework, and also about native FrontBase support (perhaps
something like PostGIS). Of course emails are welcome, but napkin and
back-of-an-envelop discussions are way more productive. So I hope some
of you managed to buy a ticket. (Unfortunately I could not make it for
the WOWODC :-(, but after the Steve Note there will be plenty of time
to discuss.
see you in a week
