so I've been informed by my German overlord that in fact _I_
committed this "fix" :) soooooo ......... I guess I'll just
take that back out now. Nothing more to see here.

I went back and found the aim conversation where Anjo and I talked
about putting this in. This is definitely fixing a 5.4
compatibility problem, but we were clearly smarter than we are
now, as neither of us knows what we were actually talking
about :) So keep an eye out for weird problems, I guess.
