Sucsessfully using ScaleDescriptor from the JAI package now.

If this is what I think it is, it might be easy to use but always gave me horrible results. A JNI wrapper around the integrated ImageIO in Mac OS X or ImageMagick or sips with a system call to the commandline might be worth a look. ImageIO should even be fast enough to do scaling for not too many images on the fly so you don't have to store all sizes (at least if you cache the results) ...
