I am questioning the dirtyness of the object. What is the magic that is going on when I click the 'close' link that doesn't leave the object filled with trash?

If you don't submit, you won't get new values into your EC. When you - say - tried to save, but had a validation error, then simply closing won't revert and you *would* have a dirty EC.

Cheers, Anjo
