you can change this under Eclipse Preference -> Java -> Code
Style -> Formatter

The problem is that Eclipse prefers the second way, and every time it
touches the code for some reason (reformatting, auto-complete, etc) I
have to add the spaces manually. How can I convince Eclipse to do what
