Funny. Same stuff here (my private project) ... ;-)
I have used A LOT of DirectToWeb to make that feasible for me as I
didn't have the time for fulltime development. But it was worth it and
worked quite good. WO is great tool for that.
There is a lot of advantage of beeing mostly generic, but there are
restrictions too. For example the implementation of "simple" new
features, like a new report, can be more complex than desirable.
I have written a small reporting engine for my own model, so that
users can create their own reports on the fields they created. Wasn't
too hard, it's something that also can be done in a quite generic way
if you keep it simple. And simple is often what users want.
Nevertheless, you are right, that some features are harder than
expected with such a system.
