I cannot make the alias work in either direction. I had to have the actual source tree starting with folder <tyf> in:
</Library/WebServer/Documents>
to make Apache work, and
</Users/(me)/Develop/tyf/WebServerResources>
to make Eclipse work.

I use this all the time. There is no reason for a link from /Library/ WebServer/Documents to your project to not work.

This would be a major source of confusion, so I deleted everything in Eclipse WebServerResources and used File/Open from the project to edit the css files.

The page loads all the images fine and the css is ok, no error on the console, but:

All the WebObjects tags appear like
	<webobject name="LoginForm">
when I do <View Source> from the browser.

On what fateful moment did I make a missing quote around a name a fatal error and how did I do that?

As a result I changed many name fields to have quotes around the name and lots of nowraps to equal signs, etc.

A clean static page now; with no connection to the dynamic server, all the elements like popups, submit buttons, etc. are missing.

You are saying that WO is not rendering the pages? You have somehow hurt that machine terribly! :-)

What is in these two directories?

/Library/Java/Extensions

/Library/WebObjects/Extensions
