D2W and stored procedures

What is the recommended way to use a stored procedure within a D2W Query?

My inclination is to create/use a fetchSpecification that uses the sp along with ERD2WQueryPage. If I do take that approach however, will other query components on the page be affected (in other words, does the FS override query bindings; how are the results filtered)?
