I actually abandoned this idea entirely within a few hours.  No browser state is retained between invocations of the desktop shortcut.  So, for example, a user can't pause during data entry, load up Contacts to copy a phone number, and expect to return to where they left off.  Worse, a phone call interruption bounces the user back to the URL of the shortcut after the call has finished, which, in the case of my app, is a login page.
