Most SQL databases are built with an SQL query engine on top of some form of "NoSQL" (I hate that term) type of backend storage, MySQL even lets you choose which one. They aren't really comparable on the same terms, and their strengths lie in different problem spaces. That being said, technically EOF doesn't actually need to use SQL in order to function, it has sufficient abstraction that it could operate on a "NoSQL" database directly. Doing so in a way that maintains all of EOFs features and a respectable level of performance would be no small task, but technically possible.
