The stuff that Pascal gave a demo of used a plugin that spoke JMX to a WO application. I think it was this one:
http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Plugins/Java-Applications-and-Servers/check_jmx/details
There are pages from Sun that give a good description of how to turn on access to the JMX information. The one I had found is this:
http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/guide/management/agent.html
I have used this on development machines. Some of our deployed machines seems to have a version of Java that is incompatible with these instructions, but that may just be on us. I have not had time to re-investigate. Hopefully, you will have better luck.
