My EOModel configuration wasn't properly filled out. My fault: I didn't look correctly at the tutorial...

I could recreate the exception which you got by using an EOModel with
Driver:
Plugin: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
These settings work for me:
Driver: com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
Plugin:
Give that a try! ;-)
