Problems with Pop-up and AjaxObserveField

I have a WOPopUpButton onea page with a companion AjaxObserveField to force an action when a selection is made. The AjaxObserveField also updates a AUC. The problem I'm having is that the popup/observer always performs the action and AUC the first time a new selection is made. If I then try to make a different selection with the same pop-up no action is fired and there's no update to the AUC.
I've tried examining the page source and the source for the pop-up/observer look identical in both situations. If I refresh the page manually, the combination works again - but only once just like before.
I know I must have done something wrong but I don't know what it is.
