Why we need installers

  • Subject: Why we need installers

Today I had the frustration of having to setup a new Eclipse/Wonder/WOLips/WO/mysql/apache/OtherJars/CustomApps on a mac.

I failed. This is failure after first failing to flog this on Windows. I failed there because, I think, of Apache vs DirectConnect vs an Adaptor.

Then another realization. There is no clear up to date resource on how one should do the above. Yes there bits and bytes scattered amongst the wiki, community, email searches, and more. Some are very old, some new, some lost, some blue, but not really simply there in its complete form with a google search/page one.

One should be able to, either on a pc or mac, download / install everything, click run, and some real sample app runs. Which says if you see this you have succeeded. Additionally the installer should have an upgrade feature for everyone else.

Granted I haven't done this often... maybe once a year, but every time, whether it be a server or a new development station, it becomes an expletive adventure consuming many frustrating hours.

Vs.

1) Install/Upgrade for Windows 7/Vista/XP with Apache
2) Install/Upgrade for OSX with Apache
3) Install for Linux (deployment).

Then we could even publish images out on Amazon, Rackspace and other clouds.

Anyway, back to starting over with this install.... something went wrong somewhere.
