AjaxObserveField weirdness (empty response from server)

Hi all.

I have a pretty weird problem with AjaxObserveField. I have a setup of dependent popups, like this:

-----------------
<wo:AjaxUpdateContainer id="someContainer">
  <wo:form>
    <table>
      <tr>
        <td>Area</td>
        <td><wo:popUpButton id="area" list="$areas" item="$currentArea" displayString="$currentArea.name" selection="$selectedArea" /></td>
      </tr>
      <tr>
        <td>Site of powerplant</td>
        <td><wo:popUpButton id="site" list="$sites" item="$currentSite" displayString="$currentSite.name" selection="$selectedSite" /></td>
      </tr>
    </table>
  </wo:form>
  <wo:AjaxObserveField updateContainerID="someContainer" observeFieldID="area" />
</wo:AjaxUpdateContainer>
-----------------

Now, if I make a selection in the "area" popup, an AJAX request is fired as expected, but the response returned is empty (meaning the form disappears).

The really weird thing is if I replace the AjaxObserveField with an AjaxSubmitButton and click it after making a selection, the update goes as expected.

I have no idea what might be causing this, there are no errors reported on the server side, and no JS errors reported on the client side.

Has anyone observed this type of behavior or have a suggestion as to what might be causing this?

Cheers,
- hugi
