AjaxInPlaceEditor expensive???

I have a table that is growing (well rows come and go) that has a couple of AjaxInPlaceEditor columns. When my user views more than 500 rows, I notice that the page starts to render more and more slowly. (it's a list of Current Open jobs)
Is there anything I can do or is the AjaxInPlaceEditor just expensive? I guess I could create a 'mode' where there are no inplaceEditors unless you check this box?
Anything else? Maybe I am using these things wrong?
