This was written by one of our engineers when we first migrated from FreeBSD (it's good, everyone should use it!) and got WO to work on CentOS under VMWare:

You will most likely need the Sun JDK, we have seen strange issues with the OpenJDK that went away after switching to the sun/oracle version.
