If you have modeled that attribute as a boolean, EOF will treat it as a boolean (the 'boolean' prototype defines a factory class for EOF to use so by the time you get the value it is no longer a varchar). If you don't want it to be a boolean, then you probably shouldn't model it as a one.

Are you using the old standalone EOGenerator tool (described on that page) or the Velocity EOGenerator capabilities built into WOLips?
