Late Friday, we tracked it down (we think!) to a bad build of Apache 2.0 or (more likely) of mod_webobjects. We rolled back to Apache 1.3 and the stock Solaris adaptor from Apple (uh, yeah, WO 5.2). The problem noted below went away.
Old and new might not mix too well. :-)
Just to be clear: we were using Apache 2.0 with a self-built version of mod_webobjects for 2.0 and rolled back to Apache 1.3 with an Apple built mod_webobjects for Apache 1.3. My working theory is that the version of mod_webobjects for 2.0 on the WO wiki has a subtle.

Which version of mod_webobjects are you using with Solaris?
We're not using Solaris. We thought about it way back and gave up on it when Apple stopped officially supporting Windows and Solaris. Skip Levens patiently listened to my griping about it back then at WWDC. P.S. A max of 4 sessions per instance is NOT normal for WO app. I would go with closer to 400 :-) The more useful statistic is requests per minute per instance and that varies a lot on what you app is doing.
Yup. Our users primarily interact with their own data so we talk to the database a lot. Our app does not have multiple database stacks so we run lots of instances.
