My experience with Maven is: if everything works Maven is dead simple. BUT if something went wrong you need a Maven-maven or become one to make it work again (for those who don't know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maven_(disambiguation) : A maven is an expert in a particular field.)
Maven wants to be everything: your dependency management, your build tool, your software live cycle, your release management and so on and on … Thus Maven needs a lot of attention and knowledge if you need to fix something or if you want to do something outlandish (outlandish in the sense of what Maven engineers think is outlandish). It IS a tame beast if no problems of some sort occur. But then again when is this the case?
