Hi Pascal,
my main dev machine is a 2010 MBP with 512 GB SSD (Apple), i7 dual core (pre-sandy bridge) and 8 GB, running Lion.
Since shortly before WOWODC 2012, I bought an additional MBA 11" with 8 GB, 256 GB SSD and i7 dual core. It clearly outperforms my only 2 years old MBP in every respect, even graphics, and that already was a big step up from the same 2008 MBP you have which I had before. I upgraded this MBA to Mountain Lion not only but also to check if I could work with that well enough.
Turns out I can. It's really good. Eclipse runs well and all. I can cope surprisingly well with the restricted screen size, but of course I also have a larger external screen in my office. Check johanhenselman's tweets shortly after the release for a few hints about what to check regarding WO development. It's not really more work than any other ordinary change of OS release or environment.
I use the rsync-based Unison file synchronizer to keep my dev stuff in sync on both machines, which also works well. You could use that for an easy transition period with your old MBP as a safety net.
I'm using the Thunderbolt Ethernet Adaptor with the MBA. No idea if the USB thing works. It would be nice if Apple would update that one to USB 3.0 and to work with every modern Mac. Another (costly) alternative would be the 27" Apple Thunderbolt display which features a built-in Ethernet port (but the electronics in that display are apparently a bit buggy).

That means I need to buy the USB Ethernet adaptor because I need the Thunderbolt port to connect my external display. Does anyone here using the USB Ethernet adaptor with the new MacBook Air and Mountain Lion?
