Data is only pushed from a child EC up to a parent. However this is not something that I think a non-IT person should know. Save is save and that's it! In the current scenario the customer lost all edits because he did not press "Save" on the outermost editor but instead chose another navigation tab.
I completely agree. The default behaviour is very confusing for my users as well. I would prefer them to save too much than not enough.

I have implemented a custom next page delegate in a couple of very specific cases that saves the entire editing context when the inner save button is hit. The outer save button is still displayed on the outer page though, so it is not a complete nor elegant solution.

I don't know if this is enough (better than nothing, but still allows data loss).

As long as there are dimmed areas (e.g. the navigation area) the users clearly sees that he is still inside an editing session and going to any navigation tab is (at least optically) discouraged.

I'll do some more thinking about it :-)

Glad to hear we have another convert!
