There are some constants in mod WebObjects source that define the maximum numbers of apps and instances per app. I don't recall what the defaults are in the public version anymore, though, but you can check it in wonder and see if you're crossing the threshold.

are you trying to increase the number of threads to your database?.

seems like 8 instances is more of a heavy load/normal situation - 50 instances sounds like maybe a mistake in approach?
