Probably some future, after all people still make a living from COBOL.  We seem to swing back and forth every 10 years or so from client based apps to server based apps.  Plain old HTML and CSS does not make for a great app experience so the current direction is towards clients with a richer interface.

I have no idea what the future looks like.  But for now, D2W and WO is pretty compelling for a lot of needs.
