I use gitolite and it works well. But I wouldn't say it is simple to start using. The documentation is there but it's not really well organized or very comprehensive - descriptions and examples are very brief.
If you don't want to invest much time to get that working, I think the atlassian product sounds great as an alternative!
Also
bitbucket.org provides free private hosting if you are ok with having your code in the cloud.
