No change to the observed behaviour: AUC update works, but the selection binding is not updated server-side, so the update doesn't populate the dependent drop-down appropriately.
In any case, my designer's patience was exceeded while waiting for me to fix this, and he's using a different drop-in replacement:

Works seamlessly.
