This looks suspicious, "unable to create new native thread”. Check the ulimit on those machines. Is something running the machine out of threads (Apache child processes gone insane)? Or does it just need a higher limit?
Thanks Chuck—I think that was it. The application in question does seem to be spawning a large number of threads. I've increased the nproc ulimit for the 'appserver' user, and the application's owner will investigate its thread creation behaviour.
