resize windows?

Hi,

Is there a way to resize a window when the bottom right of the window is off the screen (and the top of the window is already at the top)? Also, is there a way of only reducing the height of the window, w/o changing the width?

I know I can 'maximize' the window and then drag the corner, and that is a workaround, but it's not very satisfactory.

Thanks for any clues.
