Matlab's poorly written installer wants to use OroborOSX, but isn't at all smart about installing stuff as OroborOSX only works (afaik) with the non-apple stock XFree86. The solution I came up with was to beat Matlab into using Apple's X11. Some notes on what I did to install Matlab on OSX with Apple's X11 are detailed on my webpage -- http://www.ece.rice.edu/~ngrady/install_matlab_osx.html -- I've actually taken to using the second method most of the time.

ps: It should probably be noted that Matlab's installer sucks universally on all unix-like platforms and I can't remember the last time I was able to install it w/o making some change to the installer scripts or otherwise having to fudge it.
