X wasn't reading my .Xresources file on startup. When I checked the
console messages, it was complaining that it couldn't find a cc or
gcc. I got the compiler from apple's web site. You have to join ADC, which is
free, but is a bit of chore

The free download is the last option (on the last page) on the list.
Things straightened themselves out after that. I would open the console,
open X11 and check that it is complaining about not finding cc before
downloading. I wanted the compiler anyway, so it didn't bother me.
