Whenever I go back to a system with the normal behaviour, I feel all
'free' again. It would be nice to feel that way when I use my Powerbook.
Give it some time -- use the Powerbook for several days (or even a few
weeks) in a row without touching another system. Remember, you've got
several months of muscle- and eye-memory to unlearn -- that doesn't happen
overnight.
I've been using it for over a year, only using another system (IRIX's 4Dwm)
about once every few weeks. It's much better (for me).
"It doesn't happen overnight". I don't think it does actually happen - ever. It's
just not as easy (for me) to use. It's really that simple.
Also, why the heck should I change? Because I am not given the choice,
that's why. I didn't have any complaints (with the interface) before.
The apps weren't there, so I have to change.
Once you get used to having the menu bar at the top of the screen, where it
is essentially of an "infinite height," you'll start to see why it is better
to have them there. I find that I often just "throw" the cursor to the top
of the screen to get to the menus, rather than slowly edge the cursor to
where the menus are and then clicking. That is the essence of having
commonly-accessed items at the edges of the screen -- you don't have to be
exact about where you are.
I'm sorry, but it isn't easier to use. Not for me.
I'm an idiot for assuming I would be able to make it work the way I do when
I bought the thing. I should have found it out beforehand, then I would have
more seriously considered buying a Linux box.
I've got all three types of boxes on my desk(s), and by far the most
"transparent" of these is my Mac. The rest force me to conform to how they
want to work, which includes being precise with the mouse and learning
things that aren't logical. For example, why is the "Start" button at the
bottom of the screen by default? I generally start looking for things at
the *top* of the page, not the bottom. Another thing, why do I have to
press the "Start" button to shut down the machine? It simply isn't logical.
:) Well, I don't like that interface either, so I ain't got no argument there.
*BUT* at least they allow you to customise it to the way *YOU* want to work.
The reason I chose Apple over M$ is because it's unix - Linux didn't have the
apps (I've been using that, on and off, for ages too).
I don't care too much about the default, so long as I can change them. Apple
is arrogant (sp?) enough to think that everyone is the same, and we're not.
Learning the essential command/accelerator keys on each platform is even
more essential because I hardly have to take my hands off the keyboard.
I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree. It ain't gonna change anyway,
so there ain't no point in talking about it.
Max.
