On the Mac with X11, it is even better if you have a mouse with a scroll
wheel. The scroll wheel will scroll the xterm, again even without
visible scroll bars!

one relatively unknown feature of xterms (and other similar programs)
is that you can use shift pageUp and shift PageDown to scroll, even
without a scroll bar.
Besides the command line option, you can also add a line in your
Xdefaults:
*xterm*scrollBar: True
