Hello Marie,
X11 is the windowing system for various flavors of Unix, just as Quartz
is the windowing system for Mac OS X. Running X11 on Mac OS X will
allow you to use apps that were ported from Linux, BSD, or Unix to Mac
OS X. This makes Mac OS X compatible with literally thousands more
programs than it would normally. Most of them are delightfully free as
well, thanks to open source movements like the GNU project.
Strictly speaking, X11 is not the "new" system. It's much older than
Mac OS X and is the de facto standard in windowing systems amongst
POSIX-compliant operating systems. So if you have a question about a
program that runs on X11, depending on the issue, you can consult not
only this mailing list, but also the expertise of Linux communities.
Well that's (I think) an adequate definition of X11. I hope that
clarified things a bit.
Regards,
Daniel Baumgarten

Hi everybody,
I signed in, yesterday, and I get my first message today.
Please, excuse my stupid question, but what is X11 for? Is it the new
system? Can I run unix programs on it? What do YOU use it for?
I have always been using macintosh, the first one was AppleIIc, then
SE30, then a Duo, and the last before today was a PPC 7600. Today, I
have an eMac 800 of the last Xmas promotions and my english is not as
fluent as it was, since I am french.
Thanks to you all,
Marie
