When I tried it I found that even just clicking in the pager to change desktops
(without trying to move any X11 windows) could cause problems. But yes, I guess
its true that if you can make do without the pager and just use the menu, then
it will work.
Can I ask you a couple of questions though? Have you tried minimizing X11
windows to the dock and then tried restoring them after switching to another
desktop? And have you tried dragging X11 windows to the screen edges to move
them to an adjacent desktop?
