Glenn, this was an easy solution. Thank you. A little follow up,
question, though: This does allow X11 to launch without launching an
xterm, but when this is the only thing in the .xinitrc file, the
xwindows (including openoffice) no longer have borders or the aqua
buttons at the top (and genie effect and so on)... what do I need to
include to be sure this user-friendly functionality is restored as well?

/usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm &


Have that as the only thing in your .xinitrc file and X11 should start
sans
xterm.
