Aha, must be that if there is no .xinitrc, the system reads the default
xinitrc file
(e.g. in /private/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc) rather than doing the
hardwired thing. Solution
is to copy the default xinitrc to your home directory as .xinitrc and
change the window
manager it starts up from twm to quartz-wm (and make whatever other
changes you
want to the startup apps.)

Aaack! I just downloaded the new beta and installed it on top of my
previous beta and now I get "twm" for a window manager. I don't have
